  2. In 1633, Dutch soldiers and traders posted at the lonely little fort called House of Hope, one hundred miles from New Amsterdam and the center of Dutch North America, were surprised to see an English ship come sailing up the Fresh River. Jacob Van Curler, in command of the fort, called to the ship and asked where she was headed. "Up the river to trade," came the answer from her captain, William Holmes. The Dutch trained their guns on the ship; Van Curler demanded that it heave to or be fired on. But the gutsy Holmes ignored the threat and kept pushing northward. Van Curler decided not to fire, and the English eventually reached their destination. It was a choice spot ten miles north of the Dutch fort, which they had purchased from the Pequot Indians. There, they put up a single wooden house and a palisade. Soon after, sixty more of their fellow members of a church congregation in the Plymouth colony joined them. They named their town Windsor. It is considered the first permanent European settlement in the state of Connecticut. View full record

  5. During the first years of its existence, the Society, then known as the "Stonington Historical and Genealogical Society," was small. It met quarterly, in the "rooms" of the Stonington Free Library; after 1900 in their new building in Wadawanuck Square. In many ways, the Society functioned as a literary club in the early years of its existence. It requested members and other local authorities to prepare papers on aspects of the history of the Town, which were delivered at the quarterly meetings. Among these was a paper by Miss Emma Palmer, on the Bombardment of Stonington, in the War of 1812; it was subsequently printed by the Society, the first paper to be so honored, and is still available in the archives. http://www.stoningtonhistory.org/ Like this View full record
  6. Come explore with us. Lebanon is a small rural town in eastern Connecticut where English settlers first lived and farmed more than 300 years ago. It is also a place that played an unexpectedly important role in the American Revolution. This web site will introduce you to all that history and we hope will encourage you to come, visit, and explore in person. http://historyoflebanon.org/ View full record

  11. Located at 60 Towner Lane in Oxford, the museum is open on the first and third Sunday of each month. Admission is free. During the first 225 years of Oxford’s history, lighting to extend the sunlight was unsatisfactory, particularly in winter when days were short. Burning sticks of wood, firelight, reed and tallow lamps, candles, and kerosene lamps all were used by farmers and other workers and their families to work after dark. Each of these inventions had its drawbacks: smoke, insufficient light, foul odors, and the danger of setting the house on fire. Surely when electricity came to Oxford in 1918, it must have seemed like a miracle. http://www.oxford-hi...al-society.org/ View full record
