  1. http://sites.rootsweb.com/~albchgs/ Butler County is a county older than the state of Alabama. We were created on December 13, 1819 – one day before Alabama became a state. Our first county seat was at Fort Dale, where a large pioneer community grew into existence around the fort built by Capt. Sam Dale in spring 1818 near the Federal Road. Fort Dale was the site of Butler County's first school, first church and first Masonic lodge. It was one of our first voting precincts, and the first court session in the county was held under the trees around the fort. In 1822, the county seat was moved to Greenville (originally called "Butlerville"), where it remains today. The Butler County courthouse burned in April 1853, but our Historical Society has collected a vast amount of records to bridge the gap caused by this unfortunate occurence. There ARE many surviving records before 1853 – just ask us! View full record

  13. We leave behind the records of our lives in the things, photographs, correspondence, keepsakes and memories we make and pass on. It’s the responsibility of public history organizations to make sense of this by weaving our community’s story from the many individual stories of the past. I think the Butler County Historical Society is meeting this responsibility. We thank you for visiting us in the German Village, for active participation in our programs, for requesting our services, and for the time, talent, wisdom, dedication and welcome advice we receive from you every day. We greatly appreciate the annual gifts that members provide. We also ask you to understand that we receive no government support, have no admission charges, and maintain low membership fees, and therefore more than 70% of our annual operating fund comes from endowment. http://bchistoricalsociety.com/main/ The BCHS operates out of the historic Benninghofen House. The Benninghofen House is a showcase of Victorian Era lifestyle and includes all the furnishings and decor appropriate for a late 19th century home. A tour of the house reveals what life was like during the height of the industrial period, and also showcases many of the society’s prized possessions. Additionally, the BCHS manages an archive that consists of many original and secondary documents, publications, photographs, etc. If interested in research, please schedule an appointment with one of our research volunteers. 14. We want to welcome you to the Monroe Ohio Historical Society! We operate three (3) museums: an 1800’s era log cabin, a 1910 General Store, and our home, a replica of the Williamsburg Virginia, Chickahominy House. http://www.monroeoh-...calsociety.org/ The historical society was formed on May 11, 1967 for Monroe’s Sesquicentennial celebration. A group of volunteers desired to put on a 4 day event to honor the (then) village’s 150th birthday, including the printing of a history book and making a commemorative coin. They also wanted to complete a project to restore a log cabin gifted to Monroe on land donated by the Lions Club (now our community park on South Main St). Future plans included the collecting, cataloging and presentation of historic items of Monroe interest. Like this View full record

  25. The Butler County Historical Society (http://www.butlerhistory.com/) held their first meeting in 1924. The group met into the 1930s then became inactive until 1950 when a failed attempt to get the organization revitalized failed, then in 1960, under the leadership of J Campbell Brandon, the Society was brought back to an active organization. The Society is a 501(c)3, private non-profit. The Society owns five properties, consisting of eleven buildings and thousands of artifacts. We have the largest collection in the county of documents, genealogical (family) collections, artifacts, and volumes pertaining to our county. The mission of the Butler County Historical Society is to collect, preserve and interpret the documents, artifacts and historical sites of Butler County’s rich heritage for the educational benefit of the public. This Society also is providing a focus to genealogical research. Check here (http://www.butlerhistory.com/genealogy-resources/) for information as they continue to make more information available.
