Welcome you to the website of the Fairfax Genealogical Society (FxGS)! The Society provides education and training for family history researchers in the Fairfax County, Virginia, area. Although based in Fairfax, many of our members are not native to the area and so our research endeavors are not restricted to local genealogy. Indeed our interests are national and international in scope as may be reflected in the breadth of our varied Special Interest Groups (SIGs). Given our location, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., the Society incorporates into its general activities such fine research facilities as the National Archives, the Library of Congress, and the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) library. We invite you to explore this website for more information and to join us for our next program. We hope you will come back again and, of course, we would love for you to consider membership in our Society. http://www.fxgs.org/

There were several attempts to organize a Fairfax County Historical Society. The earliest occurred in 1878 when on January 12th "Pursuant to public notice, a number of citizens of Fairfax County assembled at the house of Charles Ballinger, …for the purpose of organizing a County Historical Society." Subsequent other attempts were made to organize without success. The present Historical Society of Fairfax County was organized on February 18, 1950. HSFC is the oldest organization of its kind in Fairfax County. The chief mission of the Historical Society of Fairfax County is the promotion and preservation of the history of the Fairfax County. The society's mission is primarily fulfilled through the publication of a biennial Yearbook that contains historical and scholarly articles relative to Fairfax County. http://www.fairfaxhistoricalsociety.org/
