Founded in 1973, Jefferson County Historical Society's (JCHS) first major effort was to successfully persuade Jefferson County Open Space (JCOS) to purchase the structures now known as Hiwan Homestead Museum. JCOS and JCHS currently maintain a cooperative relationship that preserves the historical structures while serving to display and interpret JCHS's local Colorado collection. Hiwan Homestead Museum was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and now features a significant Native American arts collection.   11. The Northwest Territory government authorized the creation of Jefferson County on July 29, 1797. Residents named the county in honor of Thomas Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of Independence and the first United States Secretary of State. Fort Steuben, now the site of Steubenville, contained the first federal land office in Ohio, which sold federal land to settlers as they migrated westward, spurring Ohio’s development.   15. Following several efforts to establish a library in Steubenville as early as 1830, the library was founded on October 1, 1899 to serve the City of Steubenville. During the early years of the 20th century, philanthropist Andrew Carnegie was providing funds for libraries all over the United States. Eventually, he provided funding for over 2,800 libraries throught the world. A grant was received from Carnegie to construct the building at S. 4th & Slack Streets in downtown Steubenville.   16. The Jefferson County Historical Association (JCHA), located in the county seat Monticello, was chartered by the State of Florida as a non-profit organization in 1962. The Association is a member of the Florida Historical Society and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The JCHA has called the Wirick-Simmons House its home since the purchase of the historic property in 1964.
