  4. The State Center Historical Society evolved out of efforts to save a piece of State Center’s history. In 1989, an important piece of State Center’s history was ready to be auctioned off. Watson’s Grocery Store, both the building and its contents, were to be placed on the auction block after the death of Florence Watson. William Watson had established Watson’s Grocery Store back in 1885. A fire destroyed the original building, but a new building was constructed in 1895. This building, with its shelves, bins, and counters, would remain almost unchanged during its years of operation. In 1981, Florence Watson closed the store, locking the doors and leaving everything as it was. Florence died eight years later in 1989. http://www.statecenteriowa.org/node/82 The Watson’s Grocery Store Museum is open from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays from May 1 through September 30 or by appointment year round. The Washington Center Schoolhouse and Sheppler’s Barbershop Museum are open by appointment only. Admission to all three sites is free and available by calling 641-483-2458, 641-483-2110, or 641-483-3002 to make an appointment. The State Center Historical Society welcomes new members, volunteers, and donations to help us preserve and share our community’s history. View full record

  6. The Saint Bridget Historical Society was established in 1970, as a non-profit corporation, to safeguard and watch over the interests and property of the old St. Bridget Church (above) and its former parish. This parish was established in 1862 and in September, 1967 the parish of St. Bridget was closed by the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas. It was the intent of the Archdiocese to tear down this building when former parishioners took up its cause and formed the St. Bridget Historical Society and saved this church from destruction. In 1972, Archbishop Strecker, then Archbishop of the diocese, transferred ownership of the church building to the St. Bridget Historical Society of Rural Axtell, Kansas. We are very appreciative and indebted to Archbishop Strecker for saving our church. In September of 1995 this church building was accepted as a Kansas Historic Site and in October, 1996 St. Bridget Church was listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. http://www.marshallco.net/stbridget/ President: William Sunneberg 70527 Hwy. 65, Pawnee City, NE 68420 ______________________________ Vice President: Terry Stalbaumer 341 30th Road, Axtell, KS 66403 _____________________ Secretary-Treasurer: Leo Glynn 70282 616th Avenue, Summerfield, KS 66541 (402) 248-6243 email: leoanddoris@bluevalley.net View full record
  7. We created this page to display county information for each state. Our team is engaged in building out the content to populate this page, sharing genealogy and history information. In the near future, we will be adding our library records which contain Books, Newspapers, Photos, Postcards, and other unique materials. Some of these are being presented to connect descendants with their family heirlooms (postcards, journals, Bibles). These library records will also be useful to those wanting assistance in finding an entry for their ancestors; we will perform "lookups" as time permits. If you have suggestions for content or basic input on the website, send us a message. We would be happy to incorporate your ideas. As we continue to populate this page, it should become more useful in your research so please check back soon! View full record
